Charity Donation Option Set to Begin Rolling Out Across Reverse Vending Machines

Re-turn, the administrator of Ireland’s Deposit Return Scheme, is introducing a new optional charity donation feature that is set to begin rolling out across Reverse Vending Machines (RVMs). This new feature will give RVM suppliers the ability to offer retailers the option to let customers donate their container deposits to charity when returning drinks containers.

The decision to offer this functionality rests entirely with the individual RVM suppliers. Re-turn does not play any role in determining whether an RVM supplier provides this option for retailers.

Retailers who choose to enable this feature from their RVM supplier can allow consumers to donate their container deposit refunds to a non-profit organisation. This may include registered charities, local sports clubs, or community initiatives. The selection of beneficiaries and the decision to offer this functionality rests entirely with the individual retailer.

When activated, the RVM interface will provide users with the option to donate their refund at the point of return, alongside the existing redemption option.

“The charity donation feature on Reverse Vending Machines empowers retailers and consumers alike to make a meaningful difference. It provides an additional incentive to return drinks containers through the Deposit Return Scheme, amplifying both the environmental and social impact of recycling” said Ciarán Foley, CEO of Re-turn.

This addition to the RVMs builds on the support Re-Turn has provided to over 3,000 community initiatives across Ireland that have fundraised utilising the Deposit Return Scheme, which includes large and small charities, clubs and community initiatives.

Retailers that wish to take part can contact their RVM Supplier to implement the update to their machine.
